Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Summary:
Our client is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in machine design to join our dynamic engineering team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and developing new mechanical systems, as well as supporting existing products. Focusing on rotating equipment such as turbines, compressors, pumps, and related components and auxiliary systems, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions that meet the stringent requirements of high-performance mechanical systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop mechanical systems and components, particularly in the turbomachinery domain (compressors, turbines, pumps, etc.), utilizing CAD software and general engineering design practices
- Apply design for manufacturability and assembly principles to ensure long-term product viability
- Constructing Free Body Diagrams and performing hand calculations as needed for stress/strain/thermal growth/etc.
- Review structural analyses, including stress, modal, harmonic, rotordynamic, and thermal analyses, on components and assemblies in support of trade studies and to ensure application requirements are met. Ability to conduct such analyses is a plus
- Review turbomachinery support systems, such as lubrication and seal systems. Ability to design such systems is a plus
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams, including Project Managers, Aero Engineers, Test Engineers, and Manufacturing teams, to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability
- Support design validation and product development through product validation testing, test data analysis, and implementation of product improvements based on lessons learned through testing and field operation
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to product development from concept through production and aftermarket support
- Develop comprehensive technical documentation, including design specifications, test procedures, best practices, and reports
- Assist with Root Cause investigations to diagnose issues with machinery and make recommendations for corrective action
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Master’s degree preferred
- 4+ years of experience in mechanical design and product development preferably within turbomachinery or rotating equipment
- Proficient in 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks
- Familiar with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing principles and terminology
- Experience with the creation, review, and maintenance of detailed bills of material
- Experience working within an ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality management system
- Strong background in the fundamentals of mechanical engineering (statics, dynamics, strength of materials, etc.)
- Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tools for stress, modal, harmonic, and thermal analysis
- Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in a dynamic work environment. Must be comfortable working on multiple projects in parallel
- Excellent teamwork and communication abilities
- Experience in turbomachinery design or rotating equipment
- Experience with aftermarket support of turbomachinery or other rotating equipment
- Proficient with commercially available CAE analysis software (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, NASTRAN)
- Experience with rotordynamic analysis
- Experience with CFD analysis of internal flows and turbomachinery
- Proficient with CAD Data Management tools (e.g., SolidWorks PDM, Teamcenter)
- Proficient with application of industry standards such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME B31 Process Piping Design, ASME Y14.5, AMS, API, SAE
- Experience developing quality and change management systems
- Experience with enterprise or manufacturing resource planning system implementation and usage
- Strong knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer
- Experience with fatigue failure modes (HCF/LCF)
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, and additive manufacturing
- Experience working with remote or hybrid teams
